Andy's Story

WEBSITE - Sanctuary News and Events

Andy was too young to be away from mum, about 5 or 6 inches long and in a very bad way. Not only thin, but all around her eyes was encrusted with dried pus and seeping out from her eyelids was a foul smelling matter. Naomi (a stalwart of the Thomasina Cattery and long standing volunteer) found Andy in a field in Dingli on Sunday.
Since Naomi works during the day, Jessica's mum decided to take care of Andy during the day, and Jessica and Naomi took Andy to the vet straight away. It became clear that some of the dried pus and flakes of material stuck to the kitten’s facial fur was actually all that was left of both her eyeballs. The infection in her eyes had been so bad that it had eaten away the fabric of both eyes. Andy was blind and so ill from the infection and neglect that it was not clear she would survive. It is likely that Andy lost her mum, or became lost because mother cats spend a lot of time licking the kittens eyes and ears - to keep them clean. They also spend a lot of time licking the kittens stomachs (to stimulate digestion) and bottoms - to keep them clean - this is important if the kitten is to prosper.
Naomi could not give Andy the attention she needed and that was when Jessica Camilleri and her animal loving family came to the rescue. Jessica has been a supporter of the Thomasina sanctuary for a while now, she is just 16 and does fundraising on her own initiative; her family are also supporters. They agreed to nurse Andy, who was so small she needed at least 4 meals a day and she needed grooming, as well as medication. Andy needed lots of love and help if she was to survive. Jessica realized that she would need to make a special effort to train Andy - so she could have a varied and worthwhile life. Jessica researched to find out special advice and training for blind cats, who can have a good and happy life with some minor adjustments and extra care, though they can never be allowed out to roam at will. Andy is now settling in well with Jessica and her family, who have decided to keep little Andy.
